Surprising, especially given the year (1984). Ripken & Murray might have been the best players in the A.L. Trammell was the best on the Tigers. Willie Hernandez was awesome, but others had better cases (even another pitcher - Dave Stieb).
He led the National League in WAR ten times and the majors, eight times -- so he would have had a great chance at 9 (or more) MVPs with today's voters. Amazing!

Google Willie Mays missing MVP’s for a great article on how even though Mays only finished second twice, he could twin “9” MVP’s.
So glad I saw his last road homer as a Giant in 1971!
