WGN also had me hooked on the Ryno, although the other stars of the supporting cast were Turk Wendell (My favorite player), Mark Grace (My favorite player) and Steve Buechele (My favorite player). We got lots of Cubs games in central Indiana in the mid-1980s, so I had a steady diet of Ryno, Sarge, Jody Davis, Steve Stone, and Harry. Great times, even for a Reds fan.
McCarver was there in my 1981 cards when I came back to them in '83 -- he looked ancient to me! You're right -- that tiny font always added a gravitas to the card backs.
The one ingrained in my mind is the ‘78 Bob Bailey. At age 8 I thought this guy was ancient. No idea at the time pulling his card out of the pack that he played 16 years in the bigs.
